Summer Days
by Virginia
There were several springs in the Sanlando Springs area of Florida and one of my favorite things to do in the summer was to go swimming. The water was always very cold and it felt good in the hot summer, especially since we did not have air conditioning in our homes.
Every summer our church would have a big picnic at Rock Springs. The water came out of a huge rock. the reason for the name. Everyone brought his or her favorite covered dishes and cakes and pies and someone always made homemade ice-cream. We would swim and walk on the trails until lunch time and then an hour after eating most everyone was back in the water.
A special thing about this spring was that the stream was clear for quit-a-way down the stream. We could walk part of the way in the water and swim where it was too deep.
There was a first landing which was a little dock where there was a big tree. Someone had tied a rope in the tree with an old tire on it, so you could swing out over the water and then let go and fall into the water.
There was also a second landing which was a little more difficult to get to. There was a trail back to the main swimming area, so you could walk back or swim back, if you had lots of energy and strength left. It seems like most everyone at the time or the other decided to swim and walk back up stream. By the time they had gone down stream and back up in the water, they had had a pretty good work out.
One time my mom and dad and I went camping at Rock Springs. I don’t remember if we stayed one night or two nights. I believe it was a full moon while we were there and one night just before we went to bed in our tent, we decided to go to the spring to get some cool water.
There happened to be some bees buzzing around there and one got up my under clothes and started stinging me. Well, I began jumping up and down and screaming. My dad was smoking a cigarette, so he smashed it in the cool water and put it on the bites. That took the sting right out. That is the one thing I know of that cigarettes are good for.
Virginia continues on with her story of living in the Florida area. She describes well the events that took place on those hot summer days with family and friends. I could see them hiking up and down the rock. And for sure, I got a clear image of her dance with the attack of the bees!!
I would like for her to add dates.
